The UnBenediction
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010The Un-Benediction
I remember growing up and hearing this phrase spoken as a benediction amongst the people in church…
“The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” AMEN
What’s funny is that fact that this phrase is so far from a benediction.
benediction |?beni?dik sh ?n|
noun
the utterance or bestowing of a blessing, esp. at the end of a religious service.
• ( Benediction) a service in which the congregation is blessed with the Blessed Sacrament, held mainly in the Roman Catholic Church.
• devout or formal invocation of blessedness : her arms outstretched in benediction.
• the state of being blessed : he eventually wins benediction.
I noticed this on a page today and chuckled to myself, THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE SAYING, AS THEY DID NOT TAKE THE TIME TO PICK UP THE SCRIPTURE AND JUST READ IT. They spoke these words with such assurance that they were blessing the person whom they spoke it to, and none correct them. All agreed.
This statement is not a benediction as the church lied and said it was. The statement “May YHWH watch between me and thee”, was made as a result of disagreement, dislike and displeasure amongst Laban and Jacob.
Read this in context Genesis 31: IN CONTEXT!
This was Laban’ way of letting Jacob know that YHWH was the judge of that which was done between them from that day forward.. He was saying “YHWH is watching and is my witness,” so to speak.
Genesis 31:50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, Elohim is witness betwixt me and thee.
51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee;
52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
This statement, “May YHWH watch between me and thee”, is a statement of division and separation one from the other..NOT a statement of unity.
So, the next time you hear it spoken you know what it really means is you are departing from the company of all you are in the midst of and have no desire to return to their company. You are speaking your dislike, and disdain for them.
Laban was basically saying, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! & You’d better take care of my daughters PUNK…LOL…
Just thought i’d share that for those who have ears to hear… No need to waste time knowingly casting pearls before swine…
